Your notes are not your account

Hypha keeps your notes as plain markdown files in a folder you chose on your own device. Deleting your account does not touch those files. You keep every note, exactly as you wrote it — you lose the account and syncing between devices, nothing else.

You only have an account if you signed in. If you never signed in, there is nothing to delete: Hypha works fully offline with no account at all.

Delete from inside the app

This is the fastest way and it takes effect immediately. Open Hypha, go toSettings → Sync, and choose Delete account. You will be asked to retype your email address to confirm.

Delete without the app

If you no longer have Hypha installed, email[email protected] from the address you used to sign in, asking for your account to be deleted. Requests are answered within 30 days, and normally within a few days.

The request has to come from the account's own email address. That is how we verify it is really you, and it is the reason we cannot accept deletion requests through a web form.

What is deleted

Everything tied to the account on our servers: your email address and the sign-in identities linked to it, your registered devices, your synced vaults and their encrypted contents, version history, and any sites you published. Note contents were only ever stored encrypted — we could not read them while they existed, and they are gone afterwards.

Deletion is immediate and permanent. There is no grace period and no way to restore the account afterwards. If you sign up again later with the same email address, you get a new, empty account.

What stays

The markdown files on your own devices stay exactly where they are. So do any backups or copies you made yourself. We also keep the billing records we are legally required to retain, and a dated record that an account with your email address was deleted — stored as a one-way hash, so the record cannot be read back as an email address.

If deletion is refused

There are two cases where Hypha will decline to delete the account and tell you why, so that deleting yours never destroys someone else's work or leaves you being charged:

You own a shared vault with other members. Deleting your account would remove that vault for everyone in it. Delete the vault yourself, or remove the other members first, and then delete your account. Their local markdown files are never affected either way.

You have an active paid subscription. Cancel it first, so that deleting the account cannot leave a subscription billing you with no account attached to it. Once cancelled, you can delete straight away — you do not have to wait for the paid period to run out.
